Active Listening

Ok, so I’ve disappeared again, I know…sucks, but I just can’t seem to get my act together. On the positive side, I’m sleeping a little better, mostly earlier, on most days I can actually manage to get to sleep before 3 A.M., which is a vast improvement over my previous record. I’m also getting some amount of reading done, which is awesome. But I just can’t seem to understand how to share time between movies, music, books, girlfriend, cooking and blogging…time management was never one of my talents. But I’ve been doing this new thing that I want to share with you folks.

I read this a long time back, and have only recently put it into practice. This guy had written on the net that for 30-45 minutes everyday, you do this…

…at the end of the day, when everything you had to do is done, there are absolutely no pending chores, get into your room and lock yourself in. Turn off the lights, turn off your computer, your cellular phone, your TV, anything and everything that connects you to the outside world. Get a good pair of headphones that blocks out outside noise, and turn on one album, and listen to it from start to finish, without moving a muscle, without looking at pictures, or smoking, or snacking, or drinking. Do this everyday for half an hour and it can change your life…

So I tried it, and it works, and it’s awesome. Do give it a try if you can, and tell me about your experience.

How are you?

Alright, I'm going to give it a try. What album did you listen to by the way? When you say "it works", what do you mean? :) Anyhow, sounds fascinating.

@ April - tried it with several albums. The first one was Megadeth's Youthanasia. Normally I lose patience with metal albums, but I didn't. I got through the whole album in one go. Tried it with Coldplay's Viva La Vida as well. It just opened up the music to me in a way that I rarely experience. Give it a try.

i used to do something like this in the pre-cellphone and compulsive-talking-on-the-phone days, but may be it's time I tried it again.

Great idea! Will try it sometime in the next century. 21st Century's way too hectic for me!

No really, sounds a good way to get immersed!

Some of the best music is the ones whose albums you can listen to from start to finish... I used to do this alot when I was younger and now haven't managed to make time to just listen to the music I love. Another Album that's great to do this with is Live's "Throwing Copper" album.

Hey! Good to see you back. Although I'm commenting almost a month later. No more posts? I liked the idea of listening to an album. Wish I could try. But my dogs are the last things I want to watch and enjoy before ending my day. Not moving a muscle is not an option in their presence :)

Also, I haven't tried an entire album, but I used to listen to one or two songs on repeat until I slept.

Am glad to know that mavericks are walking the planet! This is something that I used to do a lot all through school and college. It probably was 'laying the bricks for my radio foundation'. Every song was known to every curve, breath, gasp and grunt. Sometimes the ears would pick up a new sound in that old song!
I also had a different visualisation for each song. Something that rarely matched any video.
I still do it, irregularly though. It
